A few days ago I finished a new work – because of a deadline – and yes, I made it!.
I’m working on a piece currently that’s causing a few headaches because the design is so intricate – but I love proving to myself that I can solve problems.
Each day I walk past work that had no conceptual beginning – I simply began stitching for the love of it. I found it recently in a work-room tidy-up, still unfinished. I spent hours of pure pleasure turning that piece into something unique and amazing.
What puts a fire beneath us to create new work?
In a few sentences, I’ve described three different prompts, actually four – that motivates me to put my head down and create.
- Time
- Problems
- Passion
- Deadlines
Time we can all deal with if we choose. It’s our choice how we utilise our time and plan and organise every day.
Problems should be looked upon as opportunities to conquer, overcome and learn – not as roadblocks.
Passion is something you either have – or not. I don’t believe you can teach passion, it’s inherent.
And deadlines. Where would I be without a deadline or two? Once I commit, that’s it – the job will be done.
This is about understanding ourselves as artists, creators and people because we’re the only ones who know what motivates us to create.
It’s taken me a while to grasp what pushes my buttons.
